Is It Time to Pivot Your Career in a New Direction?

Is It Time to Pivot Your Career in a New Direction?

Are opportunities seemingly drying up in your current career field? Have you experienced a pay slide downward through your last few job changes? Or, perhaps you're bored by the work you currently do.

Maybe it's time for a change - a change of pace, a change of scenery, a change of occupation, or something along those lines. Here are seven signs that it might be time for you to pivot:

  1. You're Bored, No Longer Challenged, and No Longer Energized to Go to Work. If this sounds like you, then take it as a sign that you're ready for something new. You should be feeling excited and engaged by your work, not bored and stagnant.
  2. You're Not Purpose-Driven By Your Work. It can be hard to stay motivated and engaged when you're not passionate about what you do. Maybe it's time to find a career that you are genuinely enthusiastic about, because then you'll be much more likely to succeed.
  3. You're Not Learning Anything New. Not learning = NOT growing. It's important to remain competitive and stay ahead of the curve. Don't allow yourself to get stale. In other words, keep your skills fresh.
  4. You're Not Making a Clear Difference. A sense of purpose can help us be more resilient and resourceful. Try and find a job that you're proud of, and that you know is making a positive impact on the world in ways that matter most to you.
  5. You're Not Being Compensated Fairly. You should know your worth and secure your true value in the market, so that you and your family can feel financially secure. Inflation is real and impacts all of our spending power, so if you're not seeing proper adjustments to your pay where you are, then maybe it's time to consider something else.
  6. You're Not Happy. Time is our most precious resource, so try not to waste too much of it in places where you're not happy. Granted, we all "gotta do what we gotta do" in life at times. However, you deserve to be happy and protect your sanity and wellbeing, even in the workplace.
  7. The Industry is Changing. It's a helpful practice to stay up-to-date on the latest trends in your field, so that you can stay relevant and anticipate changes and disruptions. Always remain vigilant, so that you can choose change rather than be a victim of chance.

Don't be afraid to make a change, because change is just about the only guarantee we have in life. Why not anticipate it, embrace it, and leverage it to your advantage instead? Yes, pivoting your career can be a daunting task, but it can also be an incredibly rewarding one. What are your thoughts here? Have you gone through a pivot in the past? Are you considering a career pivot now? Share your thoughts in the comments.
